The February 2019 signing of the Padres’ 300 million-dollar man took Friar fans’ excitement to stratospheric levels.  A four-time All-Star and Gold Glove recipient twice over, Manny Machado’s star power captures the attention of the crowds while his team play earns him respect in the clubhouse. In an interview with Ranch & Coast, Machado’s teammate Greg Garcia referred to him as “arguably the best player in the world.” Fortunately for us, his ten-year deal means we could have nine more superlative seasons of #13 highlights to look forward to.

Best Of Ranch & Coast 2019: Family

In January 2018, Helen Woodward Animal Center announced the groundbreaking for a brand-new Adoptions Building, an undertaking that marked the second phase in the Campaign for Caring, a multi-year mission to rebuild HWAC’s aging facilities, many of which have been in place since the organization’s founding in 1972. Now, the Adoptions Building offers a private entrance and evaluation area for transfer partners bringing in adoptable animals; a new treatment room and a second exam room; new recovery and ICU areas; and a larger surgical suite with room for two surgery tables that can be utilized simultaneously. Other improvements include kennels that can be completely enclosed to protect adoptable animals from the weather, three large, turfed play yards with shade gazebos, and an aesthetically pleasing lobby and pet adoptions area.

Best Of Ranch & Coast 2019: Diversions & Culture

Already world-renowned for its prominent conservation efforts, the San Diego Zoo and its sister Safari Park achieved new heights with the July 2019 birth of Edward, the first southern white rhino to be born via artificial insemination in North America. The breakthrough brings with it hope that in vitro fertilization and the use of surrogate southern white rhino females may be the key to saving the species’ critically endangered cousin, the northern white rhino, of which only two animals remain in the world. In the meantime, the very spunky Edward and his mom, Victoria, are the stars of the Safari Park’s social media feeds and can be spotted in their enclosure from the park’s Africa Tram.
