Dr. Wilma Wooten
Editors’ Pick: Public Health Guardian
In the uncertainty that arrived with the novel coronavirus, San Diego’s Public Health Officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten, has consistently provided a calm presence in the face of the pandemic while working in collaboration with local leadership. While a number of public health officials across the country have faced criticism (or worse) in response to public safety measures taken to address COVID-19, Wooten has firmly yet effectively navigated the tricky task of informing and protecting the more than 3.3 million county residents she serves in her post.   D.M.

Ana Wilkinson
Editors’ Pick: Healthcare Hero
North County nurse Ana Wilkinson has danced her way into the hearts of COVID-19 patients and their families. At the height of the pandemic, she left her own family to volunteer for six straight weeks of grueling 14-hour days as an emergency room nurse at New York’s Harlem Hospital. “We were in a war zone,” she recalls of the virus’ staggering toll. So, Wilkinson decided that “nobody dies alone,” tracking patients transferred from the ER to intensive care in order to visit, hold their hands, and arrange calls with their family and friends. She also put on music and jammed to everyone’s delight. Her final patient was Ramon Espinal, the father of a New York City first responder who, along with Wilkinson, was at his father’s bedside when he died. “She will pass through your life for a minute and will impact it for eternity,” Espinal’s son later wrote. “My family and I believe Ana is an angel that was sent to us during these hard times.”   A.N.
