Knowing your audience is everything in design. For the new Denny Sanford Elephant Valley at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, the primary clients happened to weigh six tons. Standard spatial rules didn’t quite apply. Executed by local architect Hanna Gabriel Wells, the 13-acre layout — the largest and most ambitious in San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance history — drops human visitors directly into the herd’s world. Anchoring the site is the Mkutano House, a safari-inspired lodge designed to handle massive scale while teeing up immersive views of watering holes and dirt banks. Editor’s Pick, Street Masterpieces: Galbani Bella Vita Fest
Little Italy becomes an open-air canvas when the fourth annual Galbani Bella Vita Fest brings more than 40 talented chalk artists to the streets October 17 to 18 to create elaborate Italian-inspired works before visitors’ eyes. Celebrating the centuries-old Italian tradition of street painting, the free festival pairs its ephemeral masterpieces with live Italian music, food, merchants, cooking demonstrations, and wines from throughout Italy in the Giardino del Vino.
