Ocean Discovery Institute will celebrate its 19th annual fundraiser to raise money for education and mentorship of young people living in City Heights, an underserved San Diego community. Project Concern International has selected Julie Tafel Klaus as this year’s recipient of the Anne Otterson Community Connector Award. An avid traveler, Tafel Klaus has crossed the globe to visit PCI’s programs in India, Guatemala, and Zambia, seeking to understand the issues facing women, children, and families and to support the most vulnerable communities around the world. PCI’s 2019 gala will highlight efforts to ensure women and girls worldwide have the chance to lead safe, healthy, and productive lives. In San Diego, PCI partners with the District Attorney’s office and school districts to teach students and school communities how to recognize and report the signs of human trafficking while empowering them to make choices that increase their safety and resilience. Masquerade Ball

The Junior League of San Diego presents its fourth annual gala, a masquerade ball, from 6:30-10:30pm. Corazon de Vida Foundation is celebrating its 25th “anniversary of changing lives from the heart” during its annual Noche de Gala event. Since 1994, the Corazon de Vida Foundation has garnered national attention because of its simple mission: to raise contributions in the form of money, materials, and volunteer work to support and empower the orphaned and abandoned children of Baja, Mexico. CDV funds more than ten orphanages that serve hundreds of children in the northern part of Baja. CDV’s Continuing Education program boasts 40+ students — previous orphanage residents — in local universities and trade schools. 20th Anniversary Dinner

Solutions for Change will celebrate two decades of transforming lives at its 20th anniversary dinner, which will feature an announcement that poverty reform leaders say could fundamentally change the way we see and act on homelessness. It all began in 1999, when Chris and Tammy Megison were helping out at an emergency winter shelter with their two boys. A nine-year-old girl pulled Chris’ sleeve and asked, “Hey mister, do you live here too?” Chris looked at the girl and then over to her mother who was preparing a bed on the shelter floor. On one knee, Chris said, “I don’t live here, sweetie, but my wife and I are going to do everything possible so that you, and your family, won’t have to live here, too.” That one night forever changed not only the little girl’s family, but also the lives of 2,200+ others who have since found their way to Solutions for Change and solved their homelessness. 760.295.6013, solutionsforchange.org
A Night For Sight

For nearly three decades, The Vision of Children Foundation has been a driving force in the worldwide quest to find a cure for genetic vision disorders and childhood blindness, while supporting visually impaired children and their families. The organization presents its “A Night for Sight” Gala, featuring entertainment legends The Temptations in concert to raise funds necessary to continue its cutting-edge research. Among the most popular of The Temptations’ nearly 100 charted songs are “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone,” and many more. MS Dinner Auction

The 33rd annual MS Dinner Auction, hosted by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, will transport guests back to the ’70s for a disco-themed night to support multiple sclerosis. A new study funded by the National MS Society shows more than twice as many people in the U.S. are living with multiple sclerosis than previously thought. Earlier research estimated the prevalence to be 400,000, but this new study revealed there are nearly 1 million Americans living with MS. For more than 35 years, St. Germaine Children’s Charity has paved the way for a safer world for young children and vulnerable youth. In 2018, the nonprofit raised $125,000, bringing the total to nearly $4.9 million in support of local San Diego agencies who work on child abuse prevention since its inception. The organization’s goal this year is to double its funding. St. Germaine Children’s Charity will celebrate its 36th Annual Silver Tea, its signature fundraising event. Co-chaired by Bill and Dawn Davidson, the elegant afternoon will be held at a private estate in La Jolla. The Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA and The Paul Ecke, Jr. Poinsettia Ball Committee are striving to raise $200,000 for community outreach and YMCA scholarship opportunities. This year’s event will include an honorary toast for Paul Ecke, Jr.’s birthday. Paul was a founding member of the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA, which was later named in honor of his mother, Magdalena. The gala’s namesake followed Paul’s passing in 2002 and is an annual tradition of continuing his spirit for supporting the community. The North County Food Bank will host its second annual Season of Giving Gala. Presented by the Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians, the evening event will raise vital funds to support the organization’s hunger-relief programs including the Food Bank’s new Diaper to Degree program, which provides vital food, emergency diapers, and resources to families and youth living in poverty in our community.
