Bravo to La Jolla Playhouse (LJP) — its production of Memphis, which highlighted LJP’s 2008/09 season before moving on to Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre and then Broadway, was recognized with four Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Original Score (David Bryan), Best Book of a Musical (Joe DiPietro), and Best Orchestrations (Daryl Waters and David Bryan). Christopher Ashley, artistic director of LJP and director of Memphis, notes, “It has been a rare privilege to work with this cast and creative team — both at the Playhouse and on Broadway — and I am so proud that these great artists have received Tony Award recognition for their outstanding work on Memphis.” Watch a sneak peek of the musical here.  JANE SHIOMI
