Downtown Entertainment

From San Diego Opera and Balboa Theatre to Fluxx and beyond, there are plentiful reasons to stay and play downtown. Featured here are just a few selections worth entertaining.   JANE SHIOMI

1  The upscale Anthology is the vision of real estate developer Howard Berkson, who set out to create a world class restaurant and live music venue — a contemporary version of the great supper clubs of the ’30s and ’40s — that combines his shared passions for live music and fine dining. Music lovers can gather, have a great cocktail, and enjoy friends and an intimate music experience with some of the finest artists in the world in a variety of genres — jazz, rock, blues, Latin, indie, classical, and more. The venue features the finest state-of-the-art sound system and perfectly-tenuated acoustics. On October 7 check out Spyro Gyra. Shelby Lynne performs on October 12, and Keiko Matsui takes the stage on October 21. (619/595 0300, www.anthologysd.com)

2  Humphreys Concerts by the Bay offers a 1,400-seat outdoor theatre. Typically running from May through October, performances range from rock and jazz to comedy, blues, folk, and international music. For added luxury, consider the Lexus Dinner Show Package, which are $65 plus the price of the concert ticket, and include dinner in Humphreys Restaurant and seating in rows 1 through 7 for the concert. Dine on selections from a special Dinner Show Menu that includes dessert by the in-house pastry chef. October perfomers include George Lopez, Colbie Callait, OMD/Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Australian Pink Floyd, Julieta Venegas, David Cook, Billy Idol, Gavin DeGraw, and Celtic Thunder Heritage Tour. 3  Since 2004, Petco Park has been the open-air home ballpark of the San Diego Padres. Conveniently located between 7th and 10th Avenues, the stadium is bounded by San Diego Trolley light rail tracks along the north side of Harbor Drive. The portion of K Street between 7th and 10th is closed to automobiles and serves as a pedestrian promenade, and also provides access to the “Park at the Park” behind center field. Architects HOK Sport and Antoine Predock’s creative design pulled restaurants and other amenities away from the seating bowl itself into other surrounding buildings. As a result, the ballpark’s concourses are open not only to the playing field but also to the surrounding city. Fans in the grandstands are treated to a view of San Diego Bay and the San Diego skyline beyond the left field seats, as well as stunning vistas of Balboa Park. The San Diego Union-Tribune honored the ballpark in 2006 with an Orchid award for its design. (619/795-5005, www.petcoparkevents.com)

4  In its 35-year history, Broadway San Diego has presented more than 303 shows and events, including the record-setting blockbusters The Phantom Of The Opera, Miss Saigon, The Producers (in its West Coast premiere), Les Miserables, Disney’s The Lion King, and Wicked. On deck this season: Hair, Come Fly Away, Cats, Rock of Ages, The Addams Family, and more. Also, mark your calendar — Broadway San Diego presents a special one-night-only performance by Linda Eder with Tom Wopat at Balboa Theatre. (619/564.3000, www.broadwaysd.com)
