Emergency Pet Evacuation: How Southern California Pet Owners Can Stay Prepared Year-Round
Rancho Coastal Humane Society shares essential tips to keep you and your pets safe in any disaster

People in Southern California should be ready to evacuate with their pets at any time of year. The team at Rancho Coastal Humane Society offers helpful guidance to keep us — and our furry family members — prepared for any emergency.
Buy or build a pet evacuation kit. Have everything labeled with your contact information, and take extra labels and markers. If you evacuate, have a sign prominently displayed on a door or window informing emergency personnel that you have pets, how many, and what kind. If you evacuate with your pets, post “evacuated” signs.
Be sure your kit contains the following:
• crates/carriers, blankets, and beds, extra collars and harnesses with extra-long
• leashes (make sure the collars have identification)
• medications and a pet first aid kit
• food dishes and water bowls, enough food and water for at least one week, toys and treats, and a can opener if your pet eats canned food without a popup lid
• litter box, kitty litter, poop bags
• recent photos of your pets (preferably with you in the pictures)
• basic information including phone numbers, the name of your veterinarian, and copies of medical records in waterproof containers
• make sure that your pet’s vaccinations and microchip are up to date in case it needs to go to a boarding facility or evacuation area
