Design deals fill new consignment shop

Posted on December 19, 2017

New to Rancho Santa Fe’s Del Rayo Village is Edit, a high-end consignment shop and boutique founded by Angel O’Brien, familiar to San Diegans as the former lead singer of The Mar Dels. The shop, which carries both new and gently worn designer fashions, caters to the area’s fashionistas, stocking such designers as Chanel, Chloé, Gucci, Hermès, Hervé Léger, Karl Lagerfeld, and Prada. (Spotted recently: an embellished jacket by Dries Van Noten for $1,250 and nearly new leopard moto boots from Dolce & Gabbana for $500.) The boutique also offers more affordable pieces by Haute Hippie, Nicole Miller, Vince, Free People, and Alice + Olivia, as well as designer jeans, workout wear, and equestrian attire. “I get designer pieces every day — gowns, shoes, purses — it’s crazy!” exclaims O’Brien. “People bring their closets in to me, and those closets go out the door two days later.” She adds, “Everybody wants a bargain, something new and different.” Consignees get back 40 to 60 percent of the sales price on a sliding scale. For instance, if a dress sells for $500 or over, a consignee receives 60 percent.

O’Brien previously lived and performed in Tokyo, where she also started an online store, buying and selling designer fashions. But she put her career on hold while she and her family battled a life-threatening illness. O’Brien and her two sisters were diagnosed with breast cancer within six months of each other. They all tested positive for an abnormal BRCA2 gene, inherited from a parent, which can lead to cancer. The sisters’ struggle made national headlines and landed them on television talk shows including The Today Show and The View.

“After going through that, it took a long time to heal,” says O’Brien, who vowed to eventually follow her dream of opening her own shop. When the space formerly occupied by Poppy Boutique became available this past fall, O’Brien jumped at the chance. “Music and fashion,” she explains, “have always been my passion.” 858.832.7973, editrsf.com   Andrea Naversen
