It was a giant night for the San Diego art scene. Music-world icons Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz skipped over Los Angeles to debut a West Coast exhibit of their art collection in La Jolla, their new home town. The local pride was palpable as the couple took to the stage and bragged about the Dean Collection’s decision.

“L.A. — you have to come to us,” Keys told the hooting crowd that included Kelly Rowland, Tim Weatherspoon, and Prince Nasir Dean.

Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys features over 130 works from the personal collection that includes works by Amy Sherald, Titus Kaphar, Derrick Adams, and Mickalene Thomas. It is a striking testament to the couple’s personal philosophy: “By the artists, for the artists, with the people.” It runs through August 9.

On this night, there was a ceremonial dance by Danza Mexi’ Cayotl, which included Colette and Carson Royston and Mary and James Berglund, among others. Chulita Vinyl Club provided the sounds of the evening at the museum. The VIP after party was held at Lou Lou’s Jungle Room at The Lafayette Hotel & Club.

Giant moments: Swizz Beatz taking the stage and spinning classics alongside Rowland as Keys danced the night away.
