Culture Spotlight: Art San Diego

Posted on October 1, 2018

This month, Art San Diego celebrates ten years of showcasing contemporary fine art in Southern California with a multi-day event at the Wyland Center at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Founded by Anne Berchtold in 2009, the annual event was conceived to fill an art scene void wherein fine art, galleries, and collectors would merge in one location. After its first five successful years, Berchtold reached out to art show facilitators Redwood Media Group to take over the show, who moved it from Balboa Park to its present location in Del Mar, where it presents a variety of art including 2D visual art, sculpture, mixed media, photography, and even holographs.

This year’s event theme is “Allure,” which Linda Mariano, Art San Diego’s managing director of marketing, says is a nod to just how magnetic art is in a community. “There is an allure between the artist and marrying his materials to [the] creative vision,” she says. “There’s the allure of the gallery owner and how the collectors and clients respond to a piece, and for all of us as collectors there’s the allure of a piece in terms of what stops us, makes us look at it.”

Coinciding with the upcoming anniversary, Art San Diego has also launched its newest initiative, the Access to Art Program, which will raise funds for selected charities to share opportunities in art, design, business development, and more. “We’ve selected some nonprofits in the community to bring them exposure to art, bring to them opportunities the art world offers,” says Mariano. “For this first year, Access to Art will work with the Monarch School, Rady Children’s Hospital, Generate HOPE, which works with survivors of sex trafficking, giving them opportunity of finding new life in new way, and an organization called HEAL, which stands for Homeless Empowerment through Art and Leadership.”

HEAL’s mobile art studio routinely visits community parks to work with the homeless, giving them the tools to create art pieces and then helping them monetize it on their website. The HEAL mobile art studio will be on site at Art San Diego, encouraging people of all ages to embark on creating their own masterpiece.

Also this year, Art San Diego will feature ArtLabs — exclusive installations that guests won’t see anywhere else — and its LaunchPad program. “Anne [Berchtold] created the LaunchPad program, and we loved it and took it over and now it’s in all of our shows,” says Mariano. “We take a local, emerging artist who wants this field to be their career, give them a display space, and they become an official exhibitor at the show. It’s very exciting.”

The event kicks off Friday, October 19, with a Collectors’ Opening Night Party from 6-9pm, which will include live music, complimentary Louis Jadot wine, passed hors d’oeuvres, and live demonstrations. Ranch & Coast readers are invited to take advantage of special ticket pricing of $20 per couple by visiting bit.ly/ASD18-RCM-COLLECTOR. Art San Diego will continue through Sunday, October 21. art-sandiego.com    Ryan Thomas
