ConnectMed International, a local nonprofit dedicated to bringing our region’s gold standard of healthcare to resource-limited parts of the world, will host Camp Cosmos 2019, the second annual free therapeutic and recreational day camp for children with craniofacial differences and their families. The day camp incorporates both open play and structured activities to help families undergoing similar experiences engage with one another and their treatment teams outside the clinical setting. Activities will be facilitated by child and family therapists, nurses, doctors, and other specialists who will lead self-esteem building and camaraderie-focused activities.

“Camp Cosmos is the first community event we have ever found for kids with craniofacial differences,” says Camp Cosmos parent and past participant Tiffany Melashenko. “My son had been embarrassed of his scar, and all day at camp he kept saying, ‘Mom, look, he/she has a scar just like mine!’ He had so much fun and felt so special to be part of a bigger group. The parents at Camp Cosmos know what it’s like to sit beside your child’s bed in the hospital, to hardly sleep through recovery, and worry about peer judgment and self-esteem.” 858.201.8965, connectmed.org
