Balboa Park Centennial Celebration Performance

La Jolla Symphony is partnering with Balboa Park’s Japanese Friendship Garden on September 27 for a one-time performance of “Sila: The Breath of the World,” orchestrated by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Luther Adams. Diane Salisbury, executive director of the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus, notes, “We were just one of only nine organizations awarded funding from the City of San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture to participate in the Balboa Park Centennial Celebration, so to be able to arrange this incredible piece in the heart of our city, it truly couldn’t have been a more perfect fit. We are excited to see how the public will receive such a unique and rare orchestral performance.” The piece will be made up of five separate ensembles, with 16 members each of percussion, woodwinds, strings, brass and voices, stationed throughout the garden grounds. These separate ensembles will weave through the piece, some playing simultaneously, others in succession or even independently, and will all rise together in a perfect cacophony of symphonic bliss.
