The Friar Faithful

Published

Behind every successful Padre, there’s a — ball girl? The saying doesn’t go quite like that, but they certainly support our beloved baseball team. Teachers, mothers, a field hockey coach, EMT, and an investor by day, these gals shag foul balls at night to protect the fans and speed up the game. “We are all very lucky to do what we do,” notes Nina Detrow, now in her 14th season and the longest on-the-field employee, having recently surpassed Trevor Hoffman. “And even though they pay us, we would do it all for free.” She cites giving a kid a foul ball as one of the most rewarding aspects of the job. “It’s an honor to represent the Padres and wear their uniform!”     MIA STEFANKO
