San Diego All-Star

Published

Before the first pitch of 2009 MLB All-Star Game in St. Louis on July 14, President Obama will recognize San Diegan Richard Nares for his incredible contributions to the local community through the Emilio Nares Foundation. Nares was chosen by voters to represent the San Diego Padres as one of the 30 All-Stars Among Us, all of whom will be honored by People Magazine and Major League Baseball during the All-Star Game. For the first time, all five of the living U.S. presidents will come together for a ceremony at a sporting event, and each president will highlight the accomplishments of one of the chosen All-Stars Among Us.

Richard Nares started the Emilio Nares Foundation with his wife, Diane, after his young son died of cancer. One of the foundation’s most notable programs is Ride with Emilio, which provides transport for sick children to their weekly cancer treatments and medical appointments when their families do not have access to transportation. Approximately 20 families a week receive this vitally important service. The program has become so successful that others around the country have modeled their programs after Ride with Emilio. The 80th Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports, with pre-game ceremonies beginning at 5pm PST.
