Honoring Donald Shiley

Published

The San Diego community recently lost one of our most renowned philanthropists, Donald Shiley, who passed away at the age of 90. Shiley co-invented the Bjork-Shiley heart valve, estimated to have saved a half-million lives worldwide. Through their tremendous generosity, Shiley and his wife Darlene created the Shiley Eye Center, the Donald P. Shiley Center for Science and Technology at USD, the Shiley Marcos Alzheimer’s Research Center at UC San Diego, and more. Additional beneficiaries include The Old Globe, KPBS, and the Alzheimer’s Association, to name but a few. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Shiley Eye Center.
