Harold Small: A Large Life

Published

Harold S. Small has been elected Bailli Délégué (president) of the Bailliage des Etats-Unis of the Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, the world’s oldest and largest international food and wine society. The Rancho Santa Fe resident was installed into office this summer in New Orleans at the organization’s annual Grand Chapitre in ceremonies held at the National World War II Museum.

“The Chaîne brings together people who enjoy good food and wine and camaraderie from their shared interests,” says Small, “whether the gathering is local, regional, national, or international.  Friendships span not only years but generations, states, and national borders — the pleasures of the table are universal.” Small continues,  “The Chaîne actively supports the efforts of young men and women seeking a career in the hospitality industry. Chapters, as well as the national foundation of the Chaîne, sponsor scholarship programs to encourage the next generation of food and beverage professionals and also reach out into the community to support food banks and other organizations serving those in need of assistance.”

A wine collector and gourmand, Small has served as advisor to the San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival, and has helped raise significant funds for the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. He has also chaired the wine committee of the Fairbanks Ranch Country Club, directing the wine program to designation by the Club Managers’ Association of America as one of the top 10 out of 4,000 in the U.S. for six consecutive years.

Licensed as a certified public accountant, and also a practicing attorney, Small has served on a number of committees of both the San Diego County Bar Association and The State Bar of California. Small and his wife, Susan (also a member of the Chaîne), have three children and eight grandchildren. (www.chaineus.org)
