It’s the age-old challenge: How to create a soothing sanctuary without straying into all-vanilla territory. The design dilemma is especially pronounced right now, with a sea of overly muted “coastal modern” interiors flooding Pinterest and pages of most shelter publications. But designers are finding ways to integrate color without triggering overload by mining the moodier side of the rainbow to create beautifully layered, calming interiors that invite pinks, blues, greens, and even yellows into the home in surprisingly subtle ways.

Semi-Sweet

Chocolatey brown provides the depth and warmth everyone is craving. I love working with this color as it is grounding, creates contrast, and just about every hue can work with it. Many people have avoided brown in an effort to achieve a light and fresh interior, however it is quite possible to incorporate chocolatey brown in a deliberate and impactful way that does not detract from the rest of the space, making it a true neutral.” — Interior designer Andrea Lackie specializes in sustainable, streamlined environments that import the warmth of the natural world mixed with found objects, ethically sourced new items and time-honored vintage finds.

In the Pink

“Oh how we love to use pink as a neutral. With so many options out there, a lighter blush has the necessary depth and muted quality that screams barely-there pink. My favorite currently is Ben Moore Ground Hog Day 1166 — it pairs perfectly with warm medium wood stains, brass accents, florals in either upholstery or art work. Think of pink as leveling up from beige or white. It’s not an extreme color but it adds a wow factor that is unexpected and flows with almost any design style. For added magic color drench the room. If the color sings, add it to the ceiling, trim work, doors and walls.” – Marcella Domonkos, founder of MD Design Design Co, a Denver-based interior designer importing coastal California influences to the Rocky Mountains and beyond. Known for creating ultra-bespoke environments for busy people seeking a calm sanctuary to call home.

A Very Mellow Yellow

“Mustard yellow is emerging as a new neutral because it strikes a perfect balance between warmth and vibrancy while remaining versatile enough to blend with a wide range of color palettes. Unlike brighter yellows, its rich, earthy tone harmonizes effortlessly with both bold and muted shades. Additionally, this color adds depth without being too overwhelming!” Katelyn De Spain is the founder of Makehouse Design Studio, a North County San Diego interior design firm bringing a global perspective to relaxed and refined California interiors.

Old Navy

“Navy blue is a timeless color that has been cherished for years and will remain a beloved shade for years to come. Known for its associations with dependability and trust, navy blue serves as a steadfast neutral. Bathing this kitchen in such a revered hue makes a striking statement, commanding attention and infusing the space with energy.” – Kristin Kostamo, founder of Anna Rae Design, an award-winning interior design studio elevating the everyday through timeless, refined interiors that emphasize craftsmanship, collaboration and creativity.

Sage Brushed

“Sage green is a versatile color that can pair with a range of wood tones and color compliments making it the perfect ‘new-tral.’ Uplifting and bright without feeling staid or boring, these shades of warm light greens bring nature indoors. After all, what is more ‘new-tral’ than the shades of nature.“ – Nureed Saeed is the founder of Nu Interiors, a holistic thinking, purpose-driven design studio that believes in collaboration and emotionally intelligent design practices.

Minty Fresh!

“For an airy Southern California vibe, I love mint in almost any space. It’s the perfect touch of color that isn’t overwhelming for those that are scared of some saturation.  And it pairs well with neutrals or vibrant hues alike.”– Allison Garrison, founder of Allito Spaces, creates vacation-inspired homes for design-minded clients. Importers of color, pattern and global style into Southern California beach bungalows, cottages and modern residences.
