Yigal Azrouël

“I’m always thinking about how to empower women,” said New York-based designer Yigal Azrouël at a trunk show in Rancho Santa Fe. “I want to make her look strong, feminine, and confident.” Azrouël was showing off his eponymous line at a benefit for Miracle Babies, hosted by his sister and muse Miriam Smotrich. There is lots of leather in his collections, whether printed, embroidered, or embellished with cowrie shells to symbolize fertility and prosperity. “We’re experimenting with new techniques to create more texture,” he explained. Known for defined construction and draping, Azrouël’s designs are inspired by architecture, art, and travel. Tribal motifs, for example, turned up in the line after a recent trip to Africa. But his fashions are made in the USA, with 90 percent of the collection manufactured in New York City. 212.302.1194, yigal-azrouel.com Andrea Naversen
