This fall, 60 people will rappel down the side of the Manchester Grand Hyatt in downtown San Diego. Community members of all ages are invited to sign up for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Rappelers will have views of downtown San Diego as they descend the building. The event, called Over The Edge, is a fundraiser for Reality Changers, a local nonprofit that prepares youth to become first-generation college graduates and agents of change in their communities. Ikran Ibrahim, Reality Changers graduate, UC San Diego graduate, and current UCSD masters student, participated in the event last year. She says, “Rappelling felt amazing! I was instantly taken aback by how great the view was.” Ibrahim is the daughter of Somali refugees and was the first in her family to graduate from college.
Reality Changers provided her with support for college applications, scholarship opportunities, and career mentorship. Participants must raise or donate at least $1,000 to secure their spot. Donated funds support tutoring, mentorship, and college application assistance programs for youth like Ibrahi.
