Chefs Unite 2021
Chefs Unite, a weekly Tuesday night dinner series, brings together 17 of San Diego’s top chefs to raise awareness and critical funds for EmbraceRace, an organization that seeks to educate young children on matters of race and bias, in order to raise a brave new generation.
This CHEFS UNITE fundraising effort is the brainchild of food writer Sabrina Medora, who founded the platform Un-Plated as a space for chefs and people of the restaurant industry across the country to speak candidly about what matters to them. Sabrina became inspired by a similar initiative led by friend and chef Danny Lee of The Fried Rice Collective (Anju, CHIKO) out of Washington D.C., who organized a collaborative culinary event in response to the Stop AAPI Hate movement. She hopes this local San Diego effort will help to initiate a domino effect across other markets.
“This event is an opportunity for the chefs of San Diego to stand united against hate crimes and committed towards a better, more inclusive future by way of providing educational tools and resources to all. It’s a chance for our restaurant community to inspire others to do the same,” explains Medora.
Danny Lee, whose CHIKO concept includes locations in D.C. and Encinitas, adds, “I can’t think of a better way to build a more promising future than to educate the leaders of our next generation to embrace people of all cultures and to be proud of our diversity. It is amazing to see this idea come all the way across the country to San Diego and we are proud to play a part in it.”

Beneficiary | About EmbraceRace: A growing body of research and evidence makes clear that children’s racial sensibilities begin to form in infancy, that almost all children develop racial and other biases by kindergarten, and that those biases become fairly entrenched by adolescence. There are too few resources for young children available for parents, grandparents or other caregivers or for early childhood educators. EmbraceRace helps fill that gap. The organization is a fiscally-sponsored project of the non-profit Proteus Fund (EIN 04-3243004).
