Design and Discovery Showcase

October 10, 2018 | Salk Institute

Jonas Salk, who developed the first safe and effective polio vaccine, was a firm believer in the bond between art and science. Salk put his belief into practice and founded the Salk Institute in La Jolla, which today is globally renowned for its science and stunning architecture. The Institute continues to celebrate and nurture the connection of art and science by hosting yearly public events melding music, science, and art. That connection will again be on display at the Salk Women & Science Design and Discovery Showcase, where stunning imagery produced in Salk labs will be in the spotlight. Called microscopy, these images capture the structures and cells that make up larger organisms and give researchers the ability to see exactly what goes on during various biological processes. More than beautiful, these pictures illustrate scientific concepts explored by Salk researchers — concepts that may lead to cures. Proceeds from the event benefit the Salk Women & Science program, which provides awards to female scientists conducting high-risk research projects and engages women in the community with leaders in biological science and technology. salk.edu/design
