Editors’ Pick, Wellness Guru:
Lisa Odenweller
Lisa Odenweller founded Beaming, one of the country’s first superfood cafés, 13 years ago in San Diego, elevating the wellness industry with her food-as-medicine approach that was informed by her healthy Southern California lifestyle. It was created to help busy people simplify their lives and make healthier choices when they didn’t have the time to prepare the right foods themselves. Its success, Odenweller says, led her to wonder, “How do I reach more people and really change millions of lives?” The answer became Kroma, an online wellness company offering non-perishable, just-add-water foods to balance, supplement, and reset that counts entrepreneurs and celebs among its fans. Its success, of course, leads us to wonder what Odenweller, a self-proclaimed innovator and entrepreneur, will create next? kromawellnes.com

Padres Pedal the Cause
When Editor-at-Large Andrea Naversen first introduced us to Bill and Amy Koman in 2016, Padres Pedal the Cause, the fundraising event geared to generate funds for cancer research that the couple founded after Bill’s two bouts with cancer, was still a fledgling nonprofit. “Cures will definitely happen from here,” Bill said of San Diego then. Fast-forward to 2023, and the annual walk/ride festival is overseen by the nonprofit Curebound, and has raised more than $20 million to fund research at local institutions based on established pillars including prevention and diagnostics, new approaches, immunotherapies and vaccines, and pediatric cancers. As serious as its goal is, the one-day, joy-packed event hosted at Petco Park has us hooked: Team Ranch & Coast Magazine has participated annually since 2019. With so many ways to take part, including a 5k, spin classes atop the Western Metal Building, and 25-, 55-, and 75-mile bike courses that include a rare pedal over the Coronado Bridge, Padres Pedal the Cause forges a connection between supporter and cause that’s tough to break. And when you meet a survivor who’s directly benefited from the life-changing work funded by PPTC (we did — shout out to little Savvy Schwartz, photographed with her father, Jonathan, and our team in 2022), we dare you not to be a Padres Pedal lifer. curebound.org/padrespedal
