Season 39 at San Diego Rep
Programming at San Diego Repertory Theatre is always bold. Season 39, which begins September 3, promises to be as challenging as ever. It starts with the staging of The Pianist of Willesden Lane, adapted and directed by Hershey Felder. Willesden Lane features pianist and actress Mona Golabek and tells the story of a young piano prodigy who flees Europe in 1938 as the coming war looms. Her music makes possible her survival, sustaining her through her many experiences. Works by Grieg, Chopin, Beethoven, Debussy, Bach, and Gershwin are celebrated in this homage to the restorative power of music. The production closes September 28.
Co-founder/artistic director Sam Woodhouse directs Honky, on stage November 8 through December 7. This comedy about race has something to offend everyone. The idea is to laugh together, though individual opinions may differ. The New York Times wrote: “Honky keeps you laughing from start to finish.” (619.544.1000, www.sdrep.org) DARLENE G. DAVIES
