Groundbreaking Girls
Groundbreaking Girls
Through April 28 | Women’s Museum of California at Liberty Station
Paintings of 40 influential women in history are on display. The range of subjects is impressive, and includes architect Julia Morgan; “the mother of rock and roll,” Sister Rosetta Tharpe; Katherine Johnson, who calculated by hand the trajectories for the Apollo space missions; couture fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli; poet Maya Angelou; novelist and poet Sylvia Plath; aviatrix Amelia Earhart; Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg; and French writer, philosopher, and feminist, Simone de Beauvoir. This is a mere sample of the visual feast offered in the exhibition Groundbreaking Girls. Why “girls?” Because, says the painter of the portraits, Allison Adams, all women were girls at one time and these women, in particular, must have possessed a youthful idealism that built confidence. 619.233.7963, womensmuseumca.org Darlene G.
