West Side Story
The national tour of West Side Story, Broadway’s smash-hit revival, kicked off to rave reviews in Detroit this fall. This groundbreaking production plays SD’s Civic Theatre January 4-9. Tony Award-winning librettist Arthur Laurents’ Broadway direction will be recreated by David Saint, the associate director on Broadway. Relive this breathtaking show set in NYC in the mid-1950s that tells of the ethnic rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, and the star-crossed romance between Tony, a Jet, and Maria, sister of a Shark. The Bernstein and Sondheim score is of course considered one of Broadway’s finest, featuring such classics as “America,” “I Feel Pretty,” and “Somewhere.” (619/570-1100, www.broadwaysd.com) JANESHIOMI
