Room Service

February is the month of romance, so celebrate by slipping into the seats at Coronado’s Lamb’s Players Theatre and enjoying the lighthearted vintage screwball comedy Room Service. Touted “a rediscovered comedic gem,” the play has a wonderful showbiz history, having run for 500 performances on Broadway in 1937. Originally produced by the legendary George Abbott, it later became a motion picture starring the Marx Brothers and a youthful Lucille Ball. Script ingredients include misunderstandings, theatrical misfits, the Great Depression, wacky schemes, and frenetic pacing. Settle back, suspend all sense of disbelief, and surrender to hysterical laughter. Then, as now, economic times were shaky, mirth was good medicine, and the need to escape hard times was great. The show runs February 6 through March 22. (619/437-0600, www.lambsplayers.org)   DARLENE G. DAVIES
