On Deck At SDMA

Published

Save February 23 for the ever-popular Culture & Cocktails at the San Diego Museum of Art, at which many socially outgoing art lovers will sample cocktails and tour the current exhibits. For a pop culture treat, see Vochol: Huichol Art on Wheels, a display of more than 2,277,000 glass beads arranged on a classic Volkswagen Bug. The colorful result displays patterns and designs of the Huichol culture. Enjoy this Mexican pop art object through March 10. Also open in the SDMA galleries are Echoes of the Past: The Buddhist Cave Temples of Xiangtangshan, and Dyeing Elegance: Asian Modernism and the Art of Kuboku and Hisako Takaku. Both of these edifying shows are up from February 18 through May 27. The first offers an immersive digital recreation of early and important caves of China. The second highlights work of textile artist Kuboku Takaku, who lived from 1908 to 1993, and his daughter, Hisako, both of whom perfected the ancient technique of wax-resistant dyeing for use in textile paintings. Seventy-one pieces, including obi, kimono, and other objects, are on display. (619/232-7931, www.sdmart.org)   DARLENE G. DAVIES
