Native American Culture at Rancho Santa Fe Historical Society

Published

On Saturday, November 2, from 10:30am-12:30pm, Native American expert Dr. James Kemp will give a talk on the Hopi and Navajo cultures and will highlight the rugs and tapestries of the Navajo in Northern Arizona and New Mexico. Kemp became fascinated with the Native American culture after moving to the Southwest from the East Coast. “I found a wealth of cultures only a day or two drive from San Diego,” he notes.

Kemp has served on the board of the Mingei Museum for six years and is a retired clinical professor at the UC San Diego Department of Pediatrics. Kemp will comment on some of our own historical society’s collection as well as bring a few of his own pieces to the lecture. Although he does not consider himself to be an expert on the value of older weavings, attendees are welcome to bring any Hopi or Navajo weavings for Kemp to review. Advanced registration is required and seating is limited.  Tickets are $15 for RSFHS members and $20 for guests. The event takes place at the La Flecha House, 6036 La Flecha, Rancho Santa Fe. For further questions or to register, call Dana Evanson. (858.756.9291, info@rsfhs.org)
