Musical Month

Music is in the air this first month of 2012. In keeping with the freshness of a new start, music fans should consider attending a couple unique and promising performances. International guitarist Billy McLaughlin will join Orchestra Nova at San Diego’s KPBS on January 14 and 15. See and hear them live, then kick back and enjoy their artistry when KPBS broadcasts the recorded show in April of this year. The concert will be distributed to PBS stations nationwide. On January 30, the San Diego Early Music Society offers a program highlighted by Dame Emma Kirkby, soprano, and Daniel Taylor, countertenor, accompanied by Musica Angelica led by Thomas Haselbock. Enjoy sacred music by Handel as well as Bach’s setting of Psalm 51, Tilge, Hochster, meine Sunden, BWV 1083, based on the Stabat Mater of Pergolesi. The setting is the beautiful St. James by the Sea. Of special note is the marking of the SDEMS’ 30th anniversary this season. (619/291-8246, www.sdems.org)   DARLENE G. DAVIES
