La Jolla Playhouse Productions

Published

Keep your eyes on La Jolla Playhouse. First, what a great title — Milk Like Sugar. It reads like silk, spills smoothly off the tongue, and, hopefully, plays well on stage. This production continues its run in LJP’s Potiker Theatre through September 25, and has a universal theme that addresses making personal choices between the known and unknown, staying with the familiar no matter how awful, or exploring the prospect of breaking away and facing potential pitfalls without a safety net. Who hasn’t faced that dilemma in some form? Milk Like Sugar received the Edgerton Foundation New American Plays Award.

Meanwhile, a hot ticket item in November will be the Des McAnuff-directed production of Jesus Christ Superstar, his acclaimed revival of the megahit musical. This new take on the groundbreaking rock opera was developed at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, where McAnuff has served as artistic director. The resulting excitement revs up the entire regional theatre scene. (858/550-1010, www.lajollaplayhouse.org)   DARLENE G. DAVIES
