Cygnet’s Successes

Published

Now ten years old and nestled in historical Old Town, Cygnet Theatre has amassed a sterling track record on many counts. Consistently well acted, directed, and designed, Cygnet is a go-to place for good theatre these days. Programming is varied and adventurous. Having closed a sensational production of Stephen Sondheim’s Company, Cygnet now mounts a double-header. From September 18 through October 27, Tom Stoppard’s Travesties alternates with Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, offering two irresistible shows performed by the same cast. Stoppard’s absurdist script is hilarious and Wilde’s most popular play promises to entertain. Cygnet describes Earnest as “part satire, part comedy of manners, and part intellectual farce. Imagine Downton Abby with Wilde’s wit.” So historical, and yet so current. There are four more tantalizing shows scheduled for Cygnet’s 11th season, playing well into June, 2014.
