Cecil Lytle Performs Beethoven in 17th Annual Scholarship Concert

Published

Angela Fang, a freshman at the University of California, San Diego, envisions her future as a Supreme Court Justice, making landmark decisions that will benefit society. “I’d like to become someone who leaves an impact that will last beyond my lifetime,” notes Fang.

Fang is one of several graduates of The Preuss School UCSD who have received the Lytle Memorial Scholarship to help support them while attending Thurgood Marshall College at UC San Diego. On Sunday, January 27, the campus and local community will have the opportunity to come together to support these scholarships for outstanding students like Fang in what has become a beloved campus tradition: the Lytle Scholarship Concert. UC San Diego professor emeritus of music and world-renowned pianist, Cecil Lytle, will perform two late piano sonatas by the legendary composer Ludwig van Beethoven: Sonata #29, Opus 106 (“Das Hammerklavier”) and Sonata #32 in C Minor, Opus 111, at UC San Diego’s Conrad Prebys Music Hall.

Founded in 1999, The Preuss School UCSD is a unique public charter middle and high school for low-income, highly-motivated students who strive to become the first in their families to graduate from a four-year college or university. The Lytle Memorial Scholarship was endowed nearly two decades ago to benefit Preuss School graduates attending UC San Diego, like Fang.

“This scholarship allows me to focus on my passions and completing my goals,” says Fang. She is considering a major in political science and would like to ultimately pursue law school, where she can embark on a career to initiate significant changes.

At The Preuss School UCSD, Fang played violin in the school’s orchestra, as well as the San Diego Youth Symphony. She also dedicated her time to volunteering at UC San Diego Thornton Hospital in the nutrition department and tutored students weekly at a local library.

An accomplished musician, professor and administrator, Lytle served two terms as chair of the UC San Diego Music Department and as provost of Thurgood Marshall College from 1988-2005. He also led the initiative to found The Preuss School UCSD.

Tickets for the 17th annual Lytle Memorial Scholarship Concert are $50. Student tickets are $10; students from all schools are welcome. (858.534.1507, rels.ucsd.edu)
