Art of Elan

Published

Chamber music devotees love Art of Elan, a group offering music that is both relevant and accessible. During its eighth season, Art of Elan will salute the reinvented San Diego Opera with four distinct performances at San Diego Museum of Art, an ideal setting for the series, which celebrates the power of the human voice. First up on October 28 will be San Diego soprano Priti Gandhi in Respighi’s “Il Tramonto,” a work for voice and string quartet. Included in the same program are compositions by Nico Muhly, Argentine Heitor Villa-Lobos, Baroque master Henry Purcell, and Giacomo Puccini.

Save November 25 for Entracte, an evening of interludes and intermezzos. The setting is the SDMA’s art-filled Hibben Gallery. Music lovers will experience 2013 Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw’s “Entracte” for string quartet and Luigi Boccherini’s “Fandango Quintet” for strings and guitar.

Prayers and Songs features The Formosa Quartet, Art of Elan’s first ever ensemble in residence, on March 3, 2015. Epilogue on April 28 features the 21st century work of Missy Mazzoli and Judd Greenstein, and the West Coast premiere of Grammy-nominated composer Chris Brubeck’s clarinet quintet. Brubeck is the son of jazz icon Dave Brubeck. (619.692.2081, www.artofelan.org)    DARLENE G. DAVIES
