Step up your at-home cocktail program with this simple syrup
One thing that stops otherwise intrepid at-home cocktail mixers from tackling more complicated recipes is a lack of available accoutrements that can take an otherwise one-note drink and make it shine. Syrups, in particular, seem daunting to the unacquainted, but as barkeep Dutch House at The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe demonstrates, rather than something only fit for a special occasion, syrups are something that can be easily whipped up for a happy hour at home.
Rose-Infused Simple Syrup
“This simple syrup will keep in the refrigerator for up to a month,” says House. “The beauty of simple syrups is that you can add just about anything using the same recipe, substituting for the rose petals. Try cinnamon, cardamom, lavender, as well as basil or mint to add a real pop to your cocktails.”
Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 2 cups fresh rose petals (or 1 cup dried)
Place water and sugar in a small saucepan, bringing to a boil. Stir occasionally so that the sugar dissolves. Once the sugar dissolves, reduce the heat to a simmer. Stir in rose petals and cook for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and let steep for 10 more minutes. Strain the syrup through a fine sieve into a glass jar and let cool.
“A Rosy Perspective”
- 2 oz. vodka (use your preferred vodka)
- 1 oz. lemon juice
- ¾ oz. Lillet Blanc
- ¾ oz. rose simple syrup
Add vodka, lemon juice, Lillet Blanc, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled coupe glass and enjoy. For an on-the-rocks alternative, simply strain into a Collins glass with ice and top with club soda.
