Fourtané, a leading purveyor of estate jewelry and fine watches, has unveiled its first dedicated Rolex boutique in California, one of only 14 in the country. The 1,500-square-foot space in Fashion Valley has a decidedly nautical theme in homage to San Diego’s seafaring history. The shop’s interior is evocative of a sleek, well-appointed yacht with fine furnishings and finishes, and features Deepest Dive, an exhibition that demonstrates the Swiss watchmaker’s commitment to ocean exploration. The exhibit tells the story of the only two successful manned expeditions to the bottom of the Pacific’s Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the world’s oceans. The first of two videos highlights the 1960 dive of the bathyscaphe Trieste, equipped with an experimental Rolex Oyster model attached to the hull. The second features filmmaker James Cameron’s historic “Deepsea Challenge” dive in 2012 in which another Rolex watch was attached to the submersible’s robotic arm. Also on display: a collection of watches that reflects Rolex’s decades-long collaboration with diving professionals.
