Imagine the shock of the subject matter in 1968, when this Broadway musical was produced. In it, counterculture was mainstage and controversial topics such as interracial connections, bisexuality, opposition to monogamy, and illegal drugs were addressed by hippies with long hair. For those who had been shielded from such discussions, the experience was shattering, but for others it “Let the Sunshine In.” That iconic song, along with “Good Morning Starshine,” “The Age of Aquarius,” and many others, established it as the first triumphant rock musical.
