Dropping into the new surf exhibit at La Jolla Historical Society
La Jolla Surf: Culture, Art, Craft will put the lens on the artists, surfers, shapers, ocean lovers, oddballs, outcasts, poets, and geniuses who have passed through La Jolla during their lives. The exhibit at The Jolla Historical Society runs from February 8 to May 25.
A film will be accompanied by surf photography by Roy Porello, Jeff Divine, and the truly iconic black-and-white work of Ron Church. Plus: original artwork by John van Hamersveld, and surfboards from the region’s great shapers like Carl Ekstrom.
The exhibit, curated by John Durant, explores the development and evolution of La Jolla’s surf community. Durant, a professional photographer and a life-long surfer, has worked with Rusty Surfboards, Gordon & Smith Surfboards, Bing, Larry Mabile, and Dennis Murphy.
From February 8-May 25. Wisteria Cottage is located at 780 Prospect Street in La Jolla. Public hours are Wednesday – Sunday, 12pm– 4pm. Admission is free.
