Editors’ Pick & Readers’ Choice,
Best Florist: Adelaide’s La Jolla
R&C readers and our own editorial team turn to the expertise of Adelaide’s La Jolla for floral and gift giving needs. With a 90th anniversary on the horizon, Adelaide’s is now helmed by owners Larry Anhorn (left) and Jerry Parent (right), who took over the business in 2016 after having joined the company in 2011 to head up day-to-day operations. While being respectful of the style, gift selection, and traditions Adelaide’s has always been known for, the look and feel of the company has been shifting to better encompass all generations, from traditional to cutting-edge contemporary. “Adelaide’s is not just your grandmother’s flower shop any longer,” says Anhorn. “We are one of the only shops left in San Diego that truly knows how to create the romance and style of the ’30s and ’40s for one customer while designing a hipster wedding for another at the same time!” Adds Parent, “We are proud and humbled to be the ones to carry on Adelaide’s’ great name and reputation.” Adelaide’s services all of San Diego County, specializing in custom, one-of-a-kind floral designs, plants, events, weddings, giftware from around the world, and delicious chocolates. adelaides.com

USS Midway Museum
The USS Midway is the longest-serving American aircraft carrier of the 20th century. Named after the climactic Battle of Midway of June 1942, it missed World War II by one week when it was commissioned on September 10, 1945, but played key roles in the Cold War, Vietnam, and Operation Desert Storm until its final mission, the 1991 evacuation of civilian personnel from Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines after the eruption of nearby Mount Pinatubo. On April 11, 1992, the Midway was decommissioned and ultimately opened as the USS Midway Museum in June 2004 with a mission to preserve its history and the legacy of those who serve, and inspire and educate future generations. Visitors love it for its multitude of exhibits above and below deck, educational tours, and programs that stand as a shining example of the enduring relationship between San Diego and our beloved military. midway.org
On September 11, 2023, the 22nd anniversary of the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, groups of first responders gathered on the flight deck of the USS Midway Museum for a memorial celebration. Featured guests included members of FDNY Retirees of San Diego, the USS Midway Museum, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, National City Fire Department, San Diego Firefighters Emerald Society, and The Wounded Warrior Project, who together with members of the public in the audience honored our fallen heroes, vowing to keep our collective promise to “never forget.”
