La Jolla Music Society
Dec. 1-17, 2016
The La Jolla Music Society continues to present widely varied musical programs in December. Pianist Helene Grimaud takes the stage December 1. Recording since she was 15, playing 100 concerts a year, and having debuted with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 1999 and at Carnegie Hall in 2002, Grimaud attracts younger audiences, perhaps because she surprises listeners with her interpretive style. On December 2, San Diego Youth Symphony Chamber Orchestra plays the music of Falla, Shostakovich, and Mozart. December 9 offers an all-Beethoven program by the Takacs Quartet with violins, viola, and cello. Cap the merry month with The Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain “Holiday Show” on December 16-17. This buoyant group has performed for the British royals, with Cat Stevens, and at the Glastonbury Festival, and it has also jammed with George Harrison along the way. This orchestra has charmed audiences at Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the Sydney Opera House. Funny as well as entertaining, the Ukulele Orchestra will boost holiday spirit. 858.459.3728, ljms.org DARLENE G. DAVIES
