Jeans 4 Justice Co-Op

Published

In honor of Sexual Awareness Month, the Jeans 4 Justice Conscious Co-Op is connecting local retailers, artists, fashion designers, and sexual assault survivors committed to ending the cycle of violence by sharing their own experiences to generate awareness, engagement, transformation, and action. The campaign draws from survivors’ stories and selected pieces from Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues. Local artists then create unique pieces of wearable art to be featured in boutiques and online, where viewers can weigh in. The artist with the most votes will have his/her work incorporated into Soul Sick Denim’s Fall 2011 Collection, with proceeds going to J4J’s local programs.

The kickoff event takes place at the April 7 performance of The Vagina Monologues, during which actresses will wear the jeans. Of the monthlong campaign, local resident Shaina Brown notes, “As a survivor of sexual assault, I found this to be a cathartic way to heal. The transformation that has taken place within my soul during my participation is nothing short of a miracle. My hope is that my story can create a level of consciousness in the community around sexual violence, comfort other survivors, and contribute to this movement of social change.”(www.jeans4justice.org)
