The Right Rug

Arguably the centerpiece of any room, a new rug can bring new life to an outdated decor, and even accrue value. But with so many styles and sizes, where do you begin?

“Prioritize your rug purchases according to room size and importance,” says Amir Ghods, owner of Home Decor Fine Rugs in San Diego. “Consider the room layout. Its size and walls will determine the dimensions for a comfortable fit.” Ghods store stocks an impressive inventory, from hand-knotted antique designs to classic Persians and artistic modern creations. They even have a special vault where customers can peruse the best of the best, such as their 130-year-old antique Persian Serapi.

For quality, Ghods suggests going the hand-knotted route. “Machine-made rugs are ok, but they are synthetic, not for an investment,” he explains. “Such rugs are normally used for lower budget rooms, just for floor coverings. Handmade rugs last for generations if they are maintained properly. They will increase in value.” Ghods should know. His family has been in business for over 50 years and owned three galleries in Persia. His experience comes from as far back as three generations of master rug weavers. “I can tell you how a rug was made and sometimes even the family design by the weave of the rug.”

If you’re not looking for a new rug, but want to restore one that’s been in the family, Ghods has that covered too. He offers full restorations of those old classics. 858.274.3674, www.homedecorfinerugs.com
