On September 26, the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) presents the eighth annual MCRD San Diego Bootcamp Challenge, a three-mile obstacle run that kicks off San Diego Fleet Week. The challenging event, featuring obstacles used only by Marine recruits at MCRD, is the only time that the course is open to the public. Runners are “encouraged” by Marine drill instructors (DIs) as they battle paved roads and hard-packed dirt while taking on more than 50 obstacles in including haystacks, tunnels, fox holes, trenches, and DI-manned push-up stations. The event concludes with a post-race party with vendor booths, activities, music, food, and refreshments. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each category and age group and an official race T-shirt
will be given to all entrants. Register online. (619/524-8083, www.bootcampchallenge.com)  MIA STEFANKO
