The Grift

The Grift

The newest La Jolla Playhouse Without Walls presentation is in the wonderfully quirky and intriguing Lafayette Hotel on El Cajon Boulevard on the west end of North Park, a terrific setting for The Grift, which is a mix of game and drama. Audiences are part of the story as they move through rooms and spaces of the hotel learning the art of the con-man. Directed by the same man who created the highly successful WoW production Accomplice: San Diego, LJP’s Christopher Ashley says, “Tom Salamon follows up his inventive Accomplice with this interactive, noir-inspired piece that brings audiences to yet another new location — the celebrated Lafayette Hotel — where they become part of the action in an entertaining, clue-solving group adventure.” It’s immersive theatre, just the ticket for our age of interactive communication and social media.

The storied hotel opened in 1946 and has been visited by all kinds of people over the years, some adventurous, others artistic, and still others seeking glamour and romance. It’s now a redesigned boutique hotel with a decidedly old Hollywood kind of name, The Lafayette Hotel Swim Club & Bungalows. This landmark has survived and been given new life. The Grift plays through March 22. (858.550.1010, www.lajollaplayhouse.org)
