James McDonald is on a mission to save the beloved, endangered bee. The Olivenhain resident and owner of Encinitas Bee Company performs humane, live bee removals without using toxic chemicals, reestablishing the hives in new locations. In 2015, McDonald helped convince the Encinitas Parks & Recreation department to create a pesticide-free park, and to stop using the carcinogenic pesticide, glyphosate. He sells his locally-sourced, raw, unfiltered honey and “Magic Bee Balm” at a little store on Quail Gardens Drive in Encinitas. There, aspiring beekeepers can also buy supplies to start their own buzzing colonies. 858.750.5438, encinitasbee.com
