Dylan Langer was looking for a special project to fulfill his Eagle Scout service requirement. “I wanted something that would connect to me,” says the seventeen-year-old Langer. An avid reader, he discovered Little Free Library, a global nonprofit that registers public sites to borrow and lend books. Using woodworking skills honed in his Advanced STEAM course at Cathedral Catholic High School, the junior built two freestanding libraries. One is installed at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas, where Langer’s grandfather received care last fall. Langer stocked the library with 50 books from his own collection, including Existence by local sci-fi author David Brin, whose son is a fellow Scout. littlefreelibrary.org   Deanna Murphy
