Local Legend Susie Hutchison Inducted to the Show Jumping Hall of Fame

On Sunday, June 12, legendary   equestrian and Southern Cali-fornia native Susie Hutchison was honored by Blenheim Equisports for her induction into the U.S. Show Jumping Hall of Fame. Although the official ceremony was held in Devon, Pennsylvania, Melissa Brandes organized a beautiful West Coast reception for Hutchison before her friends, fans, and a surprise guest (her sister) at the Blenheim Summer Classic I in San Juan Capistrano.
During the 1960s, Hutchison was part of a group of immensely talented and very young riders that included Hap Hansen, Robert Ridland, Mason Phelps, and Robert Gage, all trained by Jimmy Williams. Dubbed the “Rat Pack,” each of them went on to become equestrian stars in their own right. Hansen and Gage attended the ceremony, saluting their longtime friend and competitor.
Always humble and ever grateful, Hutchison entered the arena on foot, walking down the center of two lines of fellow riders and trainers who were clapping and cheering in support.  Robert Ridland, Chef d’Equip of the U.S. Show Jumping team, read her acceptance speech, per Hutchison’s request. Both “honored and flattered,” she thanked “Jimmy Williams for introducing me to the art of horsemanship, ethics, honesty, and hard work.”
She also thanked all those who help care for her horses and “most of all, to the horses I have been blessed with, who have taken me to places in the world that most people only dream of!”
Congratulations to an amazing rider, person, and horse lover. Her famous quote, “No Guts, No Glory” could now read, “All Guts and All Glory.”
