Brian Grasela scours the West Coast for the most striking wood slabs, from Central California to Washington’s forests. “I’ve driven on some pretty wild roads to find the right piece,” says the woodworker, who has a background in finish carpentry and spent a year in the fine furniture program at the College of Redwoods. “We have entire logs milled up.” Made Lumber Supply provides top-notch materials to designers and architects like San Diego’s Basile Studio and Bluemotif Architecture. But Grasela’s favorite clients? “Homeowners are really fun and rewarding,” says Grasela, who helps customers hone in on the perfect selection. “We can create a design for them or go through images that inspire them and put our own little spin on it.” Grasela, who collaborates with other artisans, such as Lark Design Co. and Noe Design, says he encourages clients to explore their own creativity. “More people are wanting to do things themselves. If they have the skills, I can give them the materials, tools, and advice.” (619.260.8229, www.madelumber.com)
