French Connection

The Salk Institute’s iconic architecture served as the dramatic backdrop for a Dior fashion shoot, featuring French actress Marion Cotillard modeling the luxury label’s 2015 fall line. The “face” of Dior for the past six years, Cotillard personally pushed for the shoot at Salk. A decade ago, she became a devotee after watching My Architect, the film about famed architect Louis Kahn produced by his son, Nathan. In between changes, Cotillard got a private tour of the institute, including a visit to the lab of Ron Evans, PhD, the Salk scientist who has been making international headlines of his own. He is developing a diet pill that “tricks” the body into thinking it has consumed calories, causing it to burn fat. Evans calls the pill “an imaginary meal.”   ANDREA NAVERSEN
