Looking Hot

Thermal imaging has long been a benefit to many industries, including medicine, construction, security, astronomy, and more. Santa Barbara start-up Seek Thermal is now putting that power in your smart phone with a pocket-sized add-on that shows you the heat signatures all around you. Until recently such technology cost over $1,000, but Seek Thermal says they were able to break the home consumer barrier by designing a new chip in partnership with defense contractor Raytheon and Freescale Semiconductor. They coupled this with a state-of-the-art sensor in the device’s lens that can read temperature differences at distances of up to 1,000 feet, and detect a person at 200 feet. While some of the uses might send a shiver up your spine (ghost hunting, anyone?) it also offers uses one might not consider, such as checking the interior temperature of grilled meat or finding studs in walls. Pick it up for $199. (www.seekthermal.com)   RYAN THOMAS
