Red Cross Real Hero

The American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter recognized Jim Silveira, president of Rancho Coastal Humane Society, with the Wendell Cutting Humanitarian Award during the 12th annual Real Heroes Breakfast, which took place aboard the USS Midway Museum. The nomination points out that, among other accolades, prior to joining Rancho Coastal Humane Society as VP in 1999 and being named president in 2000, Silveira founded Southern California German Shepherd Rescue where he personally rescued and found new homes for 4,300 dogs. A message from the American Red Cross to Silveira playfully noted of the award: “Perhaps in your case we should rename it ‘Animaltarian!’” (760.753.6413, www.sdpets.org)
